Things To Do

Restaurants

There are many delightful restaurants and cafés in Camps Bay catering to a wide range of tastes and budgets. The view is the best by far, with all restaurants looking out onto the beach and the magnificent Atlantic ocean. Come and enjoy a leisurely breakfast, soak up the hot noon sun over lunch, or sip on some delectable cocktails while watching the most spectacular sunset ever, before settling down for dinner.

In season and over weekends the restaurants are very busy so booking is recommended. We are happy to book on your behalf, which should be done at least a day in advance, and further ahead during the peak summer season.

Below is a short description of some of the many fine restaurants in Camps Bay and surrounds, and some personal feedback and reviews from Phillip (our personal roving restaurant critic):

Azure at The Twelve Apostles Hotel      Tel: 021 437 9000
"Savour the finest indigenous and international cuisine on offer in our extremely popular Azure Restaurant. Roberto de Carvalho, our Head Chef, is on hand to create a variety of exquisite dishes including meat, seafood and vegetarian options. From the spicy entree of our Cape Malay pickled fish or the delicate fresh oysters followed by a butternut, baby marrow and morogo lasagne or the grilled kingklip served with sautéed brown rice and chives with a roasted fennel sauce, your taste buds will be infused by the finest of organic ingredients. Azure is the first to introduce Fynbos cooking - utilising this natural wild vegetation from our gardens and rounded off with a delightfully sweet dessert of fynbos honey bavarois or Bea's baked cheesecake. Taken on our stunning terrace overlooking the ocean and magnificent sunset you will truly experience the magic of Azure!".

Bayside Café      Tel: 021 438 2040
Serves unpretentious steak and seafood grills overlooking the main Camps Bay beach.
Phillip's Review (July 2007): Very friendly welcome & greeting. Bookings recommended. Excellent choice of food throughout the menu. Try the Green Fig & Blue Cheese Burger. Good size meals & well presented. This is a totally non-smoking venue.

Blues      Tel: 021 438 2040

"Blues Restaurant & Bar opened its doors in 1987 and has become the icon of the ultra-trendy Camps Bay.
Blues is the most beautiful seaside venue in Cape Town and has hosted the rich & famous since its inception, gaining international recognition and cementing itself as a Camps Bay landmark.
The delectable cuisine and world-class wine list, along with the stunning view and slick service has helped Blues maintain success for more than 20 years. This is a true testament to the class and quality with which we have become synonymous."
Phillip's Review (July 2007): Clean, bright, good service. Open kitchen. Food well presented.

Bungalow      Tel: 021 438 0007
"Contemporary cafe, Bungalow is Camps Bay's new hot spot for chilling with friends. With beautiful white and blue decor and plush white couches and beds, guests are invited to sit back and relax. The huge upholstered daybeds down the starboard side of the restaurant come straight out of hedonist heaven.
Chef Gabriel's approach to planning and preparing his signature dishes is every bit as fresh as the ingredients he meticulously sources - from specialist markets, and additive-free suppliers."
Café Caprice     Tel: 021 438 6444
"Café Caprice is undoubtedly the jewel in Cape Town's entertainment crown, and is the hangout of choice for both its local supporters and international visitors. Proud of its diverse group of loyal followers and enjoyed by stars of the silver screen, sporting heroes and iconic models, Cafe Caprice is known in the Mother City as the "home from home". The original Eat, Drink & Play venue in Cape Town, we established ourselves in 2001 and continue to grow from strength to strength. Innovative in its food and drink menu, music policy and special events, we strive to ensure that our customers are well serviced, relaxed and entertained."

Cape Town Fish Market     Tel: 021 438 1866
Restaurant, Sushi Bar & Fish Market. Cape Town Fish Market is fully licensed with a fun and vibrant atmosphere. So, if you are looking for a quick sushi lunch, a romantic crayfish dinner for two or maybe just a fresh salmon steak to impress those at home, this is the place to go.
Phillip's Review (July 2007): Now here is a manager/owner who knows what the game is about. Great selection of fresh sea food or try the sushi bar. The stir fry vegetables were the best I have tasted – you could taste the flavour in every vegetable. Great combo meals to choose from & not expensive

Codfather      Tel: 021 438 0782
Serves seafood with special emphasis on fresh linefish and shellfish.
Phillip's Review (July 2007): Bookings essential. This is a restaurant with a difference. No menu, as the fresh fish is all priced by weight. The sushi bar (which is on a long conveyor belt) is priced according to the plate colour. Excellent attentive service. Can be pricey, but highly worth the experience of dining here. If a non-smoker, ask to be seated well away from the smoking section.

Col'Cacchio's Pizzeria      Tel: 021 438 2171
Italian restaurant known for healthy pasta and pizzas, with vegetarian options.

Dizzy Jazz Café      Tel: 021 438 2686

Dunes, Hout Bay   Tel: 021 790 1876
The menu is extensive and offers excellent seafood as well as a wide variety of great meats, hamburgers, sandwiches and fresh salads to choose from.
Phillip's Review (July 2007): Great friendly fast service. Blackboard specials menu. "Good home cooked meals". Choice of lighter meals. Calamari was very fresh and tasty. Not a big menu but very well presented, especially the burgers. Upstairs dining for the smokers, downstairs for non-smokers.

Gateway to India      Tel: 021 438 4555
Indian food in a fine dining atmosphere. Good for seafood and vegetarian choices. Upmarket ambience. Presents a tantalizing mix of ethnic culinary styles which has come to be known as "The Great Hindustani Cuisine", bringing the finest culinary delights of North Indian cuisine in an authentic Indian atmosphere.

The Grand      Tel: 021 438 4253
Seafood and a contemporary menu. Ambience is classic elegance blended with hip & happening.

Hussar Grill   Tel: 021 438 0151
Part of a great steakhouse chain that has been operating in Cape Town since 1964. Opened in Camps Bay November 2007.
Philip B's Review (May 2008): The Hussar is an upmarket steakhouse with good customer service given by knowledgeable and efficient staff. The menu is varied as is the wine list. An added advantage is that for a nominal corkage fee you can take your own preferred choice of wine.

La Med      Tel: 021 438 5600
Sustainable seafood is served here, along with breakfast and pizzas. Ambience can be described as bustling.
"La Med owns summer in Cape Town. With exceptionally beautiful views, both ocean and mountain, La Med is considered by some to be the best ocean-side venue in South Africa. Locals and tourists alike pour into La Med for the ultimate summer experience. Famous for their sundowners, La Med has a vast array of tantalising cocktails and offers gourmet pizzas, burgers, seafood and salads for the hungry. What may seem like a mellow start to the evening can quickly change into a full swing party as La Med's inhouse DJ turns up the music. There is music and dancing every night until late. La Med's guests feel free to be casual and in true beach bar style, they often wear beachwear, including bikinis and board shorts."

Mariner's Wharf, Hout Bay      Tel: 021 790 2130
The Wharfside Grill is internationally renowned and as it straddles the Wharf´s famous fishmarket, diners are assured of the freshest ocean fare. With authentic harbour ambience, stunning views across the bay and dining cabins themed to famous ships, the Grill´s food is a delicious extra.
Phillip's Review (July 2007): Excellent setting right over the water. Eat inside or out on the deck. Great menu and not expensive. Waitress very knowledgeable. Fish and chips great. Will take some beating, along with the scenic drive from Blue Waters over to Hout Bay.

Marika's Restaurant       Tel: 021 438 2727
Marika's fare is by and large Mediterranean with a leaning towarks Greek home cooking. You should not rush your meal, and with this in mind, the table you have booked is yours for the evening. Marika's is 20 paces from Blue Waters.
Phillip's Review (July 2007): Just 2 doors down from Blue Waters is Marika and Frank's place. Nice and relaxed family run restaurant. I would recommend starting with a Meze platter, which is your choice of 5 starters. A totally unique dining experience. The baked lamb is superbly cooked. Keep room for the halva ice cream - a great finish to a wonderful meal.

Nando’s      Tel: 021 438 1915
Spicy Portuguese fare – famous for flame grilled peri-peri chicken. One of the few franchise Camps Bay restaurants worth mentioning, Nando's is unique to South Africa, and a friendly and good-humoured diner in Camps Bay. A respected establishment amongst the locals, offering large potions of original Portuguese flame-grilled chicken at the best prices. Although it is suitable for the entire family, this Camps Bay restaurant becomes a bit crowded on Sundays.

Luxury seafood eatery. Crayfish, oysters, mussels and much more to tickle your palate.

Paranga      Tel: 021 438 0404
Elegant contemporary restaurant renowned for its cocktails.
Phillip's Review (July 2007): Excellent menu choices, very friendly service by waitstaff. Good selection of starters including sushi, salads, meat & seafood, all competively priced. The grilled calamari is 'to die for'. The butternut ravioli is exquisite. Shame about the smokers in the restaurant. Meals that went past were well presented.

Phillip's Review (July 2007): One of my favourites as far as menu choice, and friendly service go. Spoilt for choice - had to eat here more than once. Food really well presented. Very generous proportions. Excellent wine list. The staff work as a team and seem to enjoy themselves. Kudos to Dirk, the manager.

Vida e Caffè      Tel: 021 438 4655
